Johannes F. Spreen B.S., M.P.A., and Ph.D.
age 93 of Cottrellville Twp., MI. passed away October 5, 2012 peacefully with his wife and daughter at his side. He was born September 28, 1919 in Germany. He married Sallie Ann Highstreet on Dec. 28, 1988 in Farmington Hills, MI.
Mr. Spreenís professional life included, but was not limited to, a career officer with the New York City Police Department, Police Commissioner of the City of Detroit, and having been elected as Oakland County Sheriff serving three consecutive terms beginning in 1972. He was a professor at John Jay College in New York and Director of the Law Enforcement and Protection Program at Mercy College of Detroit. He was a columnist for the Detroit News and the Port Huron Times Herald. Johannes became a distinguished Toast Master and was awarded numerous medals in the Senior Olympics and was an exceptional Tennis player.
Mr. Spreen is survived by his wife Sallie A., daughter Betty Spreen, step-children John (Brenda) Highstreet, Scott Highstreet, and Kelly Hemmerling Beaseley, 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents Fredrick and Meta Spreen, a brother Herman Spreen, a sister Johanna Curran, a stepson Steven Highstreet, and his first wife Elinor (nee Fallon) Spreen,
Funeral services 11:00 AM Tuesday October 16, 2012 in the Gilbert Funeral Home, Algonac, MI. Visitation 1-4 and 6-9 PM Monday. Burial will be in the White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, MI.
